Helping Application Service Providers Connect to Superior Performance

The former Switch and Data and Equinix operate a footprint spanning 11 countries across North America, Europe and Asia. Our sites are key locations for content application service providers (ASPs) to distribute music, video and other content to end users' eyeballs and eardrums. Our sites are also the right places for ASPs and other customers to connect to other networks in the key IP traffic exchange markets around the world.

The former Switch and Data and Equinix operate 87 data centers across the globe. Customers use us as a single provider to interconnect their networks across multiple locations or to connect or backup their network in a particular traffic exchange market or hard to reach city.

Switch and Data operates sites in North America's premium communications "carrier hotels" such as 60 Hudson St. or 111 8th Ave. in New York, or the Infomart in Dallas, 151 Front St. in Toronto, or the Westin Building in Seattle. These buildings are the most in-demand locations to efficiently interconnect communications networks. As we open new data centers in our most in-demand markets, we connect the new sites back to our existing sites in the carrier hotels to give our new space the power and connectivity to power our customers' networks into the future.

Here are some of the ways ASPs use our broad footprint of site locations to improve their businesses:

  • Network Choice: The multiple connectivity choices in our sites give ASPs options to cost effectively access multiple domestic and international Internet service providers (ISPs) to reduce latency, negotiate competitive Internet transit prices, peer traffic, avoid costly local loops and enhance network reliability and redundancy. Network performance and bandwidth expense are two areas where Switch and Data can help ASPs develop a competitive advantage.

  • Site Location: Our worldwide footprint offers locations in key communications hub markets. ASPs use these sites to store and distribute their latency sensitive data to broadband networks which carry the traffic to local businesses and homes. Switch and Data also operates the fastest growing Internet exchanges in the U.S.'s key international communications hub markets. Customers that operate bandwidth intensive websites business software applications, social networking, and rich digital content use our PAIX® Internet exchanges in New York and Palo Alto to peer their traffic with international networks to accelerate performance and reduce transit expense.

  • Customer Service: Every Switch and Data site offers highly trained TechSmart® remote support technicians to stage, install, interconnect and power up customer equipment. Customers that operate mission critical business application websites need to provide seamless performance for their customers. Failure to scale quickly can result in a poor user experience and lost revenue. Our ASP customers use our TechSmart services to rapidly expand their infrastructure in multiple sites to scale for the rapid adoption of their new services.

Here are a few statistics that illustrate the broad geographic footprint of former Switch and Data, now Equinix sites:

  • Switch and Data operates sites in 15 of the 20 top U.S. broadband cities
  • 60% of phone lines in the U.S are within 50 miles of a Switch and Data site
  • Household incomes within 50 miles of a Switch and Data site are 28% higher than the national average

Switch and Data sites cover North America's population densities and give our customers a single provider to locate their content and networks in the leading end user markets.
